Dr. Maria Montessori's Legacy

image.png

Over 100 years after the work of Dr. Maria Montessori began, Montessori education is still the number one most progressive education model worldwide. This is not surprising given that Dr. Montessori's research focused on brain development in early childhood education.  Essential tenets of "The Montessori Method" include mixed-age classrooms, freedom of movement, the 3-hour uninterrupted work cycle, and the balance of freedom and responsibility. Modern research is just now taking a look at the benefits of Montessori for children with disabilities, for developing critical-thinking and independence in lifelong learners, and for closing the equity gap in education for underprivileged children. Dr. Maria Montessori's legacy was not founding private schools or creating specialized materials, although that is one result of her work. Her legacy was teaching adults to "follow the child" using the scientific method to continually learn and hone our skills as educators and innovators of education.
